Start by creating a pencil sketch, on a
sketch pad, using references of photographs. Decide where the light is
coming from in the picture and create a shadow and light sketch with
pencil to follow later. According to your sketch make a bigger
sketch on the watercolor paper which you have already stretched on the
on plywood.
Stage One: According to the light and shadow sketch save
the white areas with masking tape.
Paint the background of the portrait starting from lighter to darker
shades. Paint the first wash of the portrait with the lighter skin tone
mixing yellow and red. and create the first shadows.
Let it dry, completely.
Stage Two: Paint a second wash
with the same transparency of color and let it dry again. The hair are
defining the face now. Let dry.
Stage Three: Paint the third coat applying the darker colors in
the shaded areas.
Stage Four: With the thin brush #1 round paint all details.
